Dental Emergencies We Treat

Severe Toothache

A persistent, intense toothache often signals deep decay or an infection that has reached the nerve of the tooth. Over-the-counter pain medication may dull the discomfort temporarily, but it will not resolve the underlying cause. The sooner we diagnose the problem, the more options you have — including treatments that can save the tooth.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

A broken tooth can result from biting down on something hard, a fall, or weakened structure from an old filling. Even a crack that seems minor can worsen quickly and allow bacteria to reach the inner tooth. Treatment may range from bonding or a dental crown to extraction and replacement, depending on the severity.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, call immediately — reimplantation is most successful within 30–60 minutes. Handle the tooth by the crown only, never the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing and keep it moist in milk or between your cheek and gum until you reach our office.

Lost Filling or Crown

When a filling or crown falls out, the underlying tooth is exposed to bacteria, temperature changes, and further damage. Save the restoration if you can and call us right away. In many cases we can re-cement a crown or place a new filling in a single visit.

Dental Abscess or Infection

A dental abscess is a pocket of pus caused by bacterial infection. Warning signs include throbbing pain, swelling in the face or jaw, a persistent bad taste, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. An untreated abscess can spread to other parts of the body and become a medical emergency. Call us immediately if you notice these symptoms.

Broken Denture

A cracked or broken denture can make eating and speaking difficult. Do not attempt to repair a denture with household glue, as these materials are toxic and can damage the appliance further. Bring the pieces to our office and we will evaluate whether a repair or replacement is the best path forward.

What to Do Before You Call

  1. Call (623) 933-8410 as early as possible

Call Copper Sky Dental at (623) 933-8410 as soon as you can. Our office is open Monday through Thursday, 7 AM to 3 PM. Early calls give us the best chance of fitting you into the same-day schedule.

  2. Describe your symptoms so we can prioritize your appointment

Tell us what happened, where it hurts, and how severe the pain is. This helps us assess urgency, prepare the right equipment, and schedule enough time for your visit.

  3. For a knocked-out tooth: keep it moist

If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown only — never touch the root. Place it in a cup of milk or hold it between your cheek and gum to keep it moist. Do not scrub or clean the tooth. Reimplantation is most successful within 30 to 60 minutes.

  4. For swelling or infection: apply a cold compress

Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek in 20-minute intervals. Avoid hot food or drinks. Do not place aspirin directly on the gums. If swelling is severe or spreading, or if you develop a fever, seek emergency room care.

  5. For a lost filling or crown: protect the area temporarily

Dental wax from any pharmacy can temporarily cover the exposed tooth and reduce sensitivity. Avoid chewing on that side. If you still have the crown, you may be able to place it back temporarily with denture adhesive — but see us as soon as possible for a permanent fix.

What should I do if I have a dental emergency after hours or on the weekend?

What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency includes severe or persistent toothache, a broken or cracked tooth, a knocked-out tooth, a lost filling or crown, a dental abscess or infection with swelling, uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth, or a broken denture that prevents eating. If you are unsure, call us — we would rather hear from you and help you decide than have you wait and risk a worse outcome.
